🧶 About Us
Handmade Studio Trust – Weaving Creativity, Confidence, and Community Since 1983
Handmade Studio Trust is a charitable craft studio based in Canterbury, New Zealand. We are a safe, inclusive, and creative space where adults with physical and learning disabilities can explore their talents, learn practical skills, and become part of a vibrant community.
More than a studio, Handmade is a place of belonging — a second home where creativity, self-expression, and personal growth flourish.
Our Purpose
Through weaving, sewing, stitching, and other activities, our clients learn valuable skills and form strong, supportive relationships with staff, volunteers, and each other.
How It All Began
Handmade Studio was founded in 1983 by Veronica Larsen and Norah Jelly, two passionate women who saw that many people with disabilities were being excluded from creative and social programs. They believed in the power of craft to bring purpose and joy — and they turned that belief into action.
Starting with fewer than 10 clients and simple materials, they built a studio where individuals could develop creative skills and grow in a positive, nurturing environment.
Our Journey
Over the years, Handmade Studio has grown into a trusted, joyful space for adults — and we’re excited to welcome more.
In the beginning, we produced items like coat hangers, cards, and woven capes. Today, our clients create a wide variety of high-quality handmade products including:
- Woven garments and accessories
- Hand-stitched toys (like teddies and rabbits)
- Baby blankets and Bowl cosy's
- Made-to-order fashion from our woven fabrics
Every item reflects the skill, dedication, and individuality of the person who made it.
Our Studio Today
Handmade Studio is a place where:
- People feel valued and included
- Creativity is used as a tool for personal development
- Friendships are built and celebrated
- Achievements are recognised and shared
It’s not just about making things — it’s about making people feel good about who they are and what they can do.
We are guided by our board of trustees and dedicated staff & volunteers with the generosity of our funders that this is possible.
Our Activities
We run a wide range of activities including:
- Traditional weaving on floor looms using NZ wool
- Toy-making and hand-sewing
- Garment design and tailoring
- Creative stitching and homeware crafts
- Monthly public Stitching Days
- Funday Fridays with shared lunches and games
- Themed holiday celebrations
- Market stalls across Canterbury
These activities allow our clients to express themselves, gain practical skills, and connect with others — while having fun!
